What is a “track dog”, and how is it different from a trial dog?
A track dog keeps show lambs or goats running around a track by staying just out of reach — the animal runs because it wants to get away, and a bell on the dog’s collar keeps the fear at a distance. Trial dogs (cattledog/sheepdog) move stock through judged courses. The kennel bred both, and most sold dogs were young dogs still becoming old, proven track dogs. What is the LSCDF?
The Lone Star Cattle Dog Futurity, run in October of each year. Dogs labeled LSCDF (year) on the sale page were entered in it, and buyers could not take possession of those dogs until after the futurity.
What kind of training was offered?
Boarding training for border collies only — at about a year old, current on vaccinations and worming. The fee was $300 per month, including room and board and training five days a week, with a two-week minimum stay. Did the dogs work cattle or sheep?
Both. The keepers — Sis, Ben, Lee, Bill — won in both cattle and sheep trials, and the kennel kept 50 to 250 nanny goats working with dogs year-round. If you’re starting from a puppy, read how to raise one so it trains.
What is Walker Club Lambs?
The Walker family’s show-lamb program, run by Dillon and Jimmy — “Bred to Win, Priced to Sell.” Lambs were bred from the 42 and Voodoo bucks, raised as prospect lambs, tracked for conditioning with the kennel’s working dogs, and shown at Texas county fairs and the South Texas State Fair — taking grand champion and reserve grand champion titles from 2000 to 2002. The place also sold dog-trained longhorns as team roping practice cattle.
Is this site affiliated with the clone watch site it links to?
No — there’s no business relationship. The watch link exists because of the Calgary photo: people kept asking what’s on Jimmy’s wrist, and it’s a clone, not a Rolex.
